Safe Haven is non-profit organization that rescues pets, and today they received $5,000 from dealsnews.com to help their cause.

Save Haven is a no-kill organization has been locally established since 2006 and rescues pets that have been abandoned or abused.

Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees announced today that Alabama's December 2010 unemployment rate is 9.1%, a slight increase from November's rate of 9.0%. The rate is significantly lower than the year-ago rate of 10.9%.

Blood donations needed due to winter weather

The recent winter weather has impacted blood collections in our area. The freezing rain, sleet and snow resulted in more than 470 units of blood that could not be collected due to blood donation center closures, cancelled blood drives and the inability of donors to attend blood drives.

Donors are encouraged to donate as soon as possible after conditions have improved enough to allow for safe travel. There is a special need for type O and type B blood donors.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Schools, government offices and businesses remain closed for the second day in much of the northern half of Alabama as the state continues to recover from what was a near record snowfall in some areas.

Gov. Bob Riley ordered state offices north of Clanton to remain closed for the second straight day Tuesday.

In the Huntsville area, where 8.9 inches of snow was reported late Sunday and early Monday, the sprawling Redstone Arsenal Army base remained closed to all but essential personnel.

Many businesses, offices and schools remained closed in the Birmingham area.

Governor Riley celebrates company expansion

Governor Riley celebrates company expansion

Governor Bob Riley will be in Scottsboro on Wednesday, January 5th to celebrate the announcement that Heat Transfer Products Group (HTPG) is expanding its operations and adding new jobs. 

HTPG is a leading manufacturer of commercial refrigeration units, coolers, evaporators and condensing units for the heat transfer industry.  The company currently has 319 employees and will add approximately 120 new jobs. 

The event at 10:00 a.m. at the HTPG Facility, 201 French Drive in the Scottsboro Industrial Park.

Ford recall

Ford is recalling nearly 15,000 trucks and crossovers because of problems with electrical systems that can short out and create a fire.

The recall includes some 2011 F-150's, F-250's, F-350's, F-450's, F-550's, Ford Edge and Lincoln MKS.
