Students from the North Sand Mountain Family Community Career Leaders of America (FCCLA) got an unscheduled demonstration of the Jackson County Sheriff's K9 unit Thursday.
The students were taking a tour of the county jail with the county narcotics unit and canine officer "Luke." Luke alerted officers to a scent coming from a vehicle parked in front of the jail.
Investigators found a small amount of marijuana inside a pipe as well as a small-caliber handgun inside the car. The owner, Amanda Kaye Smith of Dutton, was located inside the lobby of the jail, dropping off property for another inmate of the jail.
Smith was arrested and placed in the Jackson County Jail on charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $500.
