Keep an eye on your kids during the summer

Keep an eye on your kids during the summer

Earlier Thursday morning, a Huntsville child accidentally set fire to a shed while playing with a lighter.

Huntsville Fire Captain Steve Butler said that the fire could have been much more catastrophic, due to the fact that there was a fuel tank stored in the shed that could have exploded had the fire spread or intensified.

Butler also reminds families to keep a more watchful eye on your children during these summer months away from school. In this case, this refers to making sure all lighters, matches and other flammable materials are kept where little hands can't get to them.

In general, however, parents must be more dilligent in keeping tabs on where their children are and what they are doing. Any moment can be "that one moment" we all hear too often when an accident happens involving a child where the parent stepped away.

What can be said about the brilliance of Reading Rainbow, the television show that kept kids interested in books since 1983. Now, on the thirtieth anniversary of the show's premiere on PBS, host LeVar Burton has made it his mission to continue providing the show's positive literacy impact through to the digital age.

A series of 25 classic Rainbow episodes is available for purchase on Amazon, with Prime subscription holders given free access. The episodes span the show's entire original run. My personal favorite of this list, if you're interested, is "The Life Cycle of the Honeybee," with the title book read by Get Smart's Barbara Feldon.

Celebrating the 4th of July

Celebrating the 4th of July

For me the 4th of July is about one thing: FIREWORKS! Plain and simple. I mean, obluously it's about celebrating the birth of our nation. I am not in any way discounting that. I'm talking about the celebration part of the holiday.

And what better, more all American way is there to celebrate than with FIREWORKS?? They are pleasing to the eye (which is pleasing to the female demographic) and good and loud (pleasing to the male demographic) so everybody is happy. What more could you want?

But where to go see such a display in Huntsville this 4th?

There just so happen to be MANY places:

  • US Space and Rocket Center: $20 per car
  • Henagar Park: $2
  • Huntsville Stars: $8 (regular admission)
  • Dublin Park: Cost: Free
  • Goose Pond Colony: Free
  • Lake Guntersville: Free
  • Point Mallard Park: Free

But you be asking what should you do during the day before the fireworks? That is a lot of time...

Before you say "there's nothing to do..." (which is simply a ridicous notion) let me give you some options. If you still want to say, there is nothing to do, then I say you are just too picky. Because there really is plenlty to do. You just have to know where to look. And I've done all the heavy lifting for you! I've gathered all the events up and put them into a list.

Tips to keep aging relatives happy during the holidays

Tips to keep aging relatives happy during the holidays

For many families, the holiday season marks one of the only times of year that all members can gather together to celebrate and enjoy each other's company. The portrait before and after this joyous time, however, is often far less picturesque for seniors living alone or far away relatives.

As the aging population continues to grow - the U.S. Census Bureau projects over 88 million people age 65 and older in the U.S.

Fitness Friday: Thanksgiving Dinner

Fitness Friday: Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving is right around the corner.  It's going to be a big meal, but to maintain your weight successfully, you don't want to be over restrictive either.

Anna Key with Huntsville Hospital Wellness center offers these tips to enjoy Thanksgiving without over doing it.

  1. Get your Thanksgiving meal out of the house ASAP!. Enjoy your meal that day and have a turkey sandwich or leftover vegetables the next day, but try to get the dressings and the casseroles out of the house.  You may also wanting try cooking less of those things so you don't have a lot of leftovers.
  2. If going to two Thanksgivings, you have to be choosy. Eat dessert at one dinner and not the other one.
