Roofers warn about damage from severe weather | News
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- The threat of severe weather is on the way to the Valley, and wind is the primary threat. One thing you want to keep an eye on once the storm has passed: your roof. It can see a lot of damage when hit hard by Mother Nature; damage roofers said you may not be able to see from the ground.
"I think a lot of times homeowners don't realize how much damage can be done to their roof from hail and wind, for that matter," said owner of Continental Roofing Company, Butch Buis.
With the threat of severe weather and strong winds on the way, Buis breaks down what the storm could do.
"A lot of times during the storm, the shingles are constantly flipping back and then they may lie back down after the wind dies and they look and think it is okay," Buis said.
The damage may not be visible from the ground. You have to climb high to see the potential problems.
"Even though you look up there and you may not be missing shingles, that doesn't mean you don't have wind damage," he said. "You've got the potential of the shingles lifting and water and wind driven rain getting under the shingles."
Once the storm is passed, if you want to give your roof a once over, Buis suggests you leave that to the professionals.
"They really shouldn't try to get up there and do it themselves," he said. "A lot of bad things can happen."
