Railroad crossing controvery continues

Railroad crossing controvery continues

Scottsboro City Council President Matthew Hodges said on Tuesday that a public hearing will be held before the city council votes to close the North Broad Street railroad crossing.

"That's how I see it," said Hodges. "Folks need to have an opportunity to express their feelings on it."

Hodges added that the matter will not be on the agenda for a vote at next week's regular meeting.

At Monday's work session, Will Miller, of Norfolk Southern Railroad, encouraged the city council to close the railroad crossing.

Operation 10-mile takes affect Friday

The Alabama Department of Public Safety and other law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in full force along some of the state's busiest roadways for Operation 10-mile.

Targeted roads include Interstate 65, U.S. 231 and U.S. 331.

Alabama state troopers and other law enforcement officers will patrol 10-mile sections of these busiest highways —stretching from Tennessee to Florida and from Georgia to Mississippi — to remind motorists to drive safely.

Citizens voiced their concern over a railroad crossing closure at the Scottsboro City Council Monday work session.

The closure will be at North Broad Street.

According to City Engineer Charles King, the Federal Railroad Administration has a goal of consolidating 25 percent of the nation's railroad crossings, citing safety issues.

Those for the closure claim it is unsafe and too steep on both sides of the crossing.

City incentives have been offered to close the crossing, including safety upgrades to the Market Street crossing.

The city could also receive cash incentives that would go toward putting up barricades and signs at the closed crossing.

The council is not set on the closure and will discuss it in a future meeting.

Gas prices on the rise

Gas prices on the rise

By Jamel Lanee

Experts say consumers may see gas prices go up by $0.60 by this spring.

They project gas prices could be as high as $4 per gallon by May.

Nationally, prices have risen $0.19 in the past four weeks. Right now a gallon of unleaded is averaging $3.48. A year ago it was $3.12.

In Alabama, drivers are paying an average of $3.38 per gallon. That's about $0.10 more than they were paying a month ago.

Experts say there are many factors that may be contributing to the trend, including a drop in demand. More drivers are staying home to trim their fuel expenses.

Also, unrest in the Middle East tends to drive up gas prices.
