WEATHER BLOG: Weekend flood watches

By Jeff Castle

Flood Watches are in effect across north Alabama and southern Tennessee this weekend.  2" to as much as 4" of rain may fall over the weekend as a cold front and upper level low pressure system pass through the area.  The ground is already very wet from recent rainfall and many streams and creeks are running high.  It won't take much additional rain to cause flooding issues.

The forecast for the weekend is becoming clearer, but unfortunately it's not looking any better for your outdoor plans.  An usually strong early May cold front will spread steadier rain across the area late Friday into Saturday.  Behind the front is an upper level low pressure area that will keep showers going through Monday.

Rain this afternoon will still be spotty at best.  WAFF 48 Pinpoint Predictor is showing sparse coverage of showers by mid-afternoon.

The storm system that we’ve been discussing for over a week now is still at least 4 days away. It hasn’t even entered the United States yet. Currently, the storm is just now coming onshore Western British Columbia Canada.

Ahead of this system, we will be sitting pretty with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday… The high pressure then shifts eastward as a potent cold front gets sandwiched between the 2 coastal ridges of high pressure.
