WEATHER BLOG: Warm and muggy with thunderstorms...

Southerly winds have returned to the Tennessee Valley and temperatures will remain above normal during the afternoon and overnight hours through Thursday.  The south wind will continue to bring in low level moisture so showers and thunderstorms will be possible over the next couple of days due to upper level disturbances and daytime heating.

Highs will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s Tuesday and Wednesday with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing.   Some of the thunderstorms could become strong with locally heavy rain and gusty winds.  Overnight lows will be in the middle 60s.

WEATHER BLOG: A great start to the work week

WEATHER BLOG: A great start to the work week

A rain cooled boundary moved in early this afternoon from a cluster of showers and thunderstorms that formed along the Gulf Coast late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.  This area of rain is finally tracking east of the Tennessee Valley.

The mass of showers and thunderstorms ended up tracking much closer to North Alabama and southern Tennessee.  This resulted in temperatures only in the lower to middle 60s for much of the afternoon.

The morning models are coming in and there's really no change to our thinking both in terms of timing or intensity of tomorrow's storms.  The Storm Prediction Center has maintained the standard slight risk of severe weather for all of north Alabama and southern Tennessee.

WEATHER BLOG: Great looking weekend!

WEATHER BLOG: Great looking weekend!

he weekend is upon us and the weather is looking fantastic!  It's going to be a big turnaround from yesterday's weather which was the coldest April 4th on record.  Minimum maximum temperature records were broken across north Alabama.  Huh, you ask?  Basically our high temperatures yesterday were the lowest ever seen on April 4th since records have been kept.  Here's how chilly it ended up around the area:

47 in Huntsville (old record was 50 in 1987)

46 in Decatur (old record was 48 in 1901)

48 in Muscle Shoals (old record was 50 in 1998)

The next 5 days will look a whole lot different.  Instead of just a couple of warm days, it looks like the spring-like temperatures may be here to stay finally!   We could see the first 80 degree temperatures of 2013, and the first since November 3rd.

WEATHER BLOG: Quiet behind the cold front. Rain returns Thursday.

WEATHER BLOG: Quiet behind the cold front. Rain returns Thursday.

A cold front has moved into the Tennessee Valley.  Temperatures will slowly fall into the upper 50s early this evening with overnight lows around 40. It will be mostly cloudy and cooler for Tuesday afternoon with highs only in the middle to upper 50s.  The wind will be from the northeast tomorrow around 7-12mph.

Clear and cool early Wednesday morning with perhaps our last threat for a killer frost this season in many areas.  Clouds will increase Wednesday afternoon with highs around 60.  The wind will shift to the east throughout the day.

WEATHER BLOG: Warm Monday... Cooler Tuesday

WEATHER BLOG: Warm Monday... Cooler Tuesday

After a foggy start, skies are clearing out nicely for most of the area.  As of 10:30am we're seeing plenty of sunshine across the area with just a little fog hanging on along the Tennessee River around Decatur.

Temperatures will warm up nicely this afternoon with highs later today in the upper 60s to low 70s.  The warmer weather won't last all week however.  A cold front located to our north will bring colder air over the next few days.

Easter Sunday Rain

Easter Sunday Rain

After fairly widespread light to moderate showers Saturday evening, we’ll have a brief dry break overnight into early Sunday morning. A few spotty light showers are possible for Easter sunrise services but I think, for the most part, we’ll be mostly dry.  Morning temperatures will be mild under the cloudy skies, in the mid 50s.
