Hard freeze Thursday morning... Snow chances Friday

Hard freeze Thursday morning... Snow chances Friday

The calendar may say it's spring but winter is still hanging on the rest of the week.  Not only did we see a hard freeze this morning (temperatures at or below 28), but snow remains in the forecast tonight.

Today's record low in Huntsville is 20, so we really weren't too far off from it.  That gives you some perspective of how unusual it is to have a morning this cold this time of year.

Rare comet watching this week

Rare comet watching this week

With clearer skies on the horizon, you may want to step outside this week to catch a glimpse of the Comet PanSTARRS. It will be viewable with the naked eye in the early evening over the next several days.  It  should be about as bright as most stars in the Big Dipper.  Each evening,  it will be a little farther to the right in the sky, and gradually over the next  few days, it will begin to grow dimmer.

PanSTARRS should be only one of two comets visible to the naked eye in 2013.  It is also believed to be on a ~100,000 year orbit... Pretty rare.

Another Shot Of Rain

Another Shot Of Rain

Dry weather will hang around for the rest of today, but we're already tracking the next cold front that will bring a wave of wet weather in tomorrow and another shot of chilly air and maybe even a few snowflakes by midweek.

Showers will arrive after midnight and continue through the morning commute.

Showers and a few thunderstorms will be most widespread by 2pm.

Strong wind the main threat over next few days

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- Possibly strong thunderstorms will move into the Valley Thursday morning.

A line of thunderstorms will form ahead of the front overnight Wednesday along the Mississippi River. This line will accelerate to the east and begin to affect the Shoals soon after sunrise Thursday morning.

The primary threat will be isolated damaging wind gusts along with the heavy rain. The strongest storms will move into the Huntsville Metro area between 10 a.m. and noon and then affect areas of DeKalb, Jackson, and Marshall counties between noon and 2 p.m.

Much colder air and a strong northwest wind will move in behind the storms. Expect wind chill values to be in the upper 20s by 5p.m.

Storms exit and leave cold behind

Storms exit and leave cold behind
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The rain and storms are pretty much out of the Huntsville area.

Much chillier air arriving this afternoon behind a strong cold front.

Temperatures will drop from around 60 early this morning into the upper 40s by mid afternoon.  Temperatures will continue the downward plunge tonight with lows in the upper 20s.

Sunshine returns tomorrow but temperatures will only reach the mid 40s for highs.

The remainder of the week looks quiet with seasonably cool weather.  Highs will be mainly in the 50s with overnight lows in the 20s to low 30s.

Some more rain is possible over the weekend with temperatures staying in the 50s for highs.

Bleak Rain Chances

Bleak Rain Chances

As we track a couple of fronts over the coming days, not much to them, really.  The first system is out in the Rockies and moving into the Plains.  It's very limited with moisture and not much kick.

So our Tuesday rain chances are fairly slim, but there may be enough lift for isolated sprinkles or patches of light rain along the front.  Models are not optimistic about much if any precipitation.  In fact we may end up with a fairly nice Tuesday with just a few more clouds lingering around the Valley.

Thanksgiving still looking just fine with sunshine and highs in the mid and upper 60s.

We skip ahead to Saturday and that's when we're expecting the next cold front.  It too is not that impressive.  Bleak rain chances at best but we'll be tracking both systems for you over the coming days.

Hold on to the Jacket

Hold on to the Jacket

As Fall continues to settle in with its coloring of our Valley, temperatures continue to settle lower and lower.

Tonight will be another bite of chill.  There are freeze warnings to our south down toward Birmingham, but no such Warnings or Advisories around here.  Most of us will see temperatures right around freezing by early morning.

And with a weak upper-level trough digging south tomorrow, a few more clouds will roll in and keep our afternoon highs from wondering too far away from today's chilly peaks in the lower 50s.
